Cal perches on the hood of the van, watching the first of the cherry blossoms open themselves and greet the morning light. How odd, she - it’s she today - thinks, to see this moment of welcoming, to see something bloom.

One of her hands reaches out, touches one of the flowers with gentle fingers. She offers a quiet welcome of her own, telling the things that live within the plant that she hopes they do well in this world.

A very delayed ficlet for you <3

The sea rushes up to greet her, their long-lost child, their daughter. They kiss her feet, calling to her, singing sweet songs of freedom and promise.

The sun knows they’ve lost this one, knows that, once they’ve bowed down to the night, she’ll have fled all the way, swimming deep, deep down to the depths. She’ll be a legend, the only part of her to meet the sky again will be her name, spoken on the lips of sailors who tell her story.

The sea whispers to the sun as the two of them part ways. They offer promises, comforts, sweet songs from the water as a consolation prize. They tell the sun that, no matter what, no one has lost in this trade.

The next day, as the sun rises and the water catches the light, the sea is calm, the sky bright and sailors hear whispers on the wind.

When you started, you had no idea how much comfort you would find in it, your fingers gently bending pages, transforming the brightly colored pieces into the things you saw demonstrated in books. You had no idea that what you thought would be a fun, easy and soothing hobby would enrapture you in ways that left you reeling and reveling in equal measure.

But there's potential in every page, a sculpture, a creature, waiting to be found within the folds.

You realize, at some point in all the making of cranes and tigers and other animals, that they watched you back. They waited to see what you created next, who you brought into their pack. It only occurred to you later to really wonder if they were hoping for something in particular.

But you don't think too hard, just know that you need something to do with your hands, with the papers you've collected, and with...well, with the other things.

Because you can't hear the ghosts over the music you play as you work, you can't feel the m pulling at you as you select a design to try to tackle. And, when you start touching the paper, feeling it's potential, you can almost pretend that you're choosing to do this for fun.
