Friday survival, go us!

Morning all! I'm hoping you are well and everything is treating you kindly. Today I managed to get myself out of bed at a reasonable time and for this, I am really, really proud. I've been sleeping really oddly the past week or so, and because of that I'm pretty pleased I'm up and have had enough sleep to function today.

Woke up well before I was ready by a neighbor mowing at 8:45 this morning (I didn't get to sleep until ~2am) and then made the mistake of falling back to sleep after he stopped, so today has ... not been productive. But I'm still ahead on GYWO and my garden is coming along nicely.

Yesterday I signed up for an online therapist via 7cups.com. It remains to be seen whether that will help, but it's worth a try.

On the other hand, Colleen is back in the hospital. This time she seems to be active enough that she probably won't need weeks of rehab to get her strength back, which is very good.

Finished a knitting project! This included doing some swatching to determine the most pleasant-looking decreases, which is rather important because I'm writing the pattern up to sell it, so it's gotta look good! Tomorrow I type up the pattern and put out the call for testers.

Sadly, my designs are rather niche (dolls & their clothes of video game characters) and they just don't attract many buyers. I've had a doll pattern on sale since February. I offered it for free for two days, as people usually do with new designs, and it had a ton of downloads, but since then.... Crickets.

I just released a pattern for clothes today, and again offering it free for two days. My email is dinging every 30 seconds with notifications of downloads. I'm offering a discount on the doll that goes with the clothes, and have had just one sale so far. I don't expect many sales at all, honestly--I'd be thrilled if I get ten.

(The thinking behind offering it for free for a limited time is that people will then make it and create project pages, which helps promote the design. Folks are more likely to buy if they are projects attached. Sadly, I had over 500 free downloads of my doll pattern and not a single person created a project page for it, which probably meant it was downloaded by pattern hoarders and not folks who were intending on making it.)

I... started a podcast? Like, for real? It's a show where I interview scientists from underrepresented backgrounds about their personal/professional journey, then ask them to share a piece of advice for up and coming scientists. Episode 1 is out now and episode 2 will be out this Wednesday, ~noon EST. (You can check us out at Branching Out (STEM).

I'm also doing free tarot readings this month because, thanks to fandom, I made enough money to go to therapy in May! \o/
